# How Correct Is Your Answer? A Semantic Correctness Framework for Open QA Evaluation > Findings of EMNLP 2026. Semantic correctness as an ordered taxonomy, with monotonicity as the evaluation criterion. CAP (Context-Aware Precision) is a reference-based metric for evaluating semantic correctness in open QA: it turns (question, gold answer) and (question, predicted answer) into declarative statements and scores them with bidirectional weighted NLI, giving CAP(g, p) in [0, 1]. Authors: Elitsa Yotkova*, Violeta Kastreva*, Petar Velkov, Hristo Boyanov, Dimitar Dimitrov, Preslav Nakov, Ivan Koychev (*equal contribution). Sofia University, ETH Zurich, University of Zurich, MBZUAI. Key facts: - Taxonomy of 8 ordered correctness classes: exact, equivalent, alternative correct, overinclusive valid, partial, overinclusive invalid, invalid, contradictory. - Monotonicity criteria: exact ≈ equivalent ≈ alternative-correct ≥ overinclusive_valid > partial > overinclusive_invalid > invalid ≥ contradictory. More correct classes should receive higher metric scores. - CAP: D(s_g → s_p) = P_entailment(s_g → s_p) + λ·P_neutral(s_g → s_p); CAP(s_g, s_p) = α·D(s_g → s_p) + (1 − α)·D(s_p → s_g), with α = 0.85 and λ = 0.30. - Pairwise accuracy against the taxonomy ordering: CAP 77.70, COMET 61.10, BERTScore 56.18, ROUGE-L 55.35, METEOR 53.71, BLEU 51.57 (chance 50). Monotonicity violations: CAP 4/25, COMET 9/25, BERTScore 11/25. - Code is MIT licensed.
